another history of heavy metal

The first few years of heavy metal (the music being called classic metal at times because of its pioneering status) are considered by most as the best era of the genre ever. Without a doubt, it is quite a memorable segment of this music's history. It was back then that Led Zeppelin, unquestionably the most popular heavy metal band ever, created classics such as "Black Dog" and the Arabian "Kashmir;" but also had the brilliance of experimenting with forms of music such as reggae and folk. In fact, the latter was an essential part of the most widely known heavy metal song ever: "Stairway to Heaven." The masterfully created masterpiece was crafted by Page and vocalist Robert Plant to perfection and even today remains a constant radio staple.
It was, however, until 1970 that Black Sabbath inaugurated what many consider the "true" spirit and essence of heavy metal. Gloomy, crunching, and foreboding, albums like Black Sabbath, Paranoid, and Master of Reality demonstrated the wicked musical direction of guitarist Tony Iommi and band members Ozzy Osbourne, Bill Ward, and Geezer Butler through classic songs like "N.I.B.," "Paranoid," and "Children of the Grave." Bands such as Corrosion of Conformity, Metallica, and Nirvana were all influenced by the metal anthems provided by one of the genre's most memorable bands ever, and the face of modern music has hardly ever been the same since the Birmingham act exploded unto the scene. Meanwhile, Deep Purple, after going through a progressive rock stint with vocalist Rod Evans and bassist Nick Simper, developed a solid slab of rock on its classic Deep Purple In Rock, and would for a long time be heralded as a true innovator of music. In fact, Ritchie Blackmore's classical guitar training, along with Jon Lord's synthesizers and Ian Gillan's piercing shrieks, was crucial in the development of heavy metal as it is known today.

During the mid-Seventies, six new bands were to also walk into the spotlight: the Blue Oyster Cult, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Queen, Aerosmith, and Kiss. Judas Priest would be responsible for popularizing the concept of two guitarists in a heavy metal band; Aerosmith for bringing back the blues, sex, and drugs; Thin Lizzy for breaking through with aesthetical and musical flash and style; Queen for introducing perhaps the greatest degree of experimentation within music and the renewal of majestic melodies and harmonies with a progressive rock edge; and Kiss for revolutionizing the art of live shows, at times presenting slightly macabre theatrics strongly reminiscent of Alice Cooper's. And the Blue Oyster Cult? They disappeared into oblivion after a series of forgettable albums released in the 80's. But during their halcyon days in the 70's, they were an important part of the hard rock arena circuit, combining beautiful 60's harmonies with searing guitars.

While a number of heavy metal bands cemented their reputation as rock giants for years to come, certain bands would begin taking another highly popular form of music, progressive rock, into a heavier direction. Bands like Pink Floyd and Genesis had remained most of the time outside the heavy metal realms, while others like Jethro Tull, Yes, and King Crimson flirted with it more often on songs like "Aqualung," "Heart of the Sunrise," and "21st Century Schizoid Man," respectively. Characterized by complex song structures, odd time signature arrangements, and a highly technical and virtuous use of instruments, progressive metal would nevertheless not come truly into being until the creation of Rush. On its debut album, Rush, the band had not yet acquired a tendency for the progressive; but by the time of Fly By Night and the acquisition of drummer Neil Peart, the band had changed its approach and become more ambitious lyrically and musically, driving its progressive outings to their furthermost limits on albums like A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres. Most other progressive bands throughout history, such as Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Focus, Asia, IQ, and Marillion, only flirted with metal through their years of existence.

Unfortunately, metal was to stagnate completely in the late Seventies. Aerosmith, Thin Lizzy, and Black Sabbath were digging their own graves due to their drug-consuming habits, Kiss had lost its charm because of over-commercialization, Deep Purple faded out through its never-ending personnel changes, and Led Zeppelin ended with the death of drummer John Bonham; only Judas Priest and Queen remained almost intact during these times. And not only were the greatest bands dying slowly, but every new band was just ripping off the old glory; metal was on its dying bed. Only a few bands were still thriving among the ruins, among them AC/DC and Rush; the former taking over the world with its three-chord attack, guitarist Angus Young's lunatic careening on stage, and Bon Scott's hell-raising screams; the latter inspiring new generations of musicians with its progressive brand of music. Ted Nugent, formerly of the Amboy Dukes, also released hyperactive gems like Cat Scratch Fever and Double Live Gonzo to much acclaim during the last half of the Seventies, and would be another of the few surviving musical groups. Blackmore's Rainbow was the last of the great rock giants to die or metamorphose by the end of the Eighties, after Ronnie James Dio left the band amidst a flurry of clashing egos which had earlier produced melodic epics on albums like Rainbow Rising and Long Live Rock n' Roll.

the history of Queen (band)

I thought up the name Queen. It's just a name, but it's very regal obviously, and it sounds splendid. It's a strong name, very universal and immediate. It had a lot of visual potential and was open to all sorts of interpretations.

—Freddie Mercury

In 1969, guitarist Brian May, a student at London's Imperial College, and bassist Tim Staffell decided to form a group. May placed an advertisement on the college notice board for a "Mitch Mitchell/Ginger Baker type" drummer; Roger Taylor, a young dental student, auditioned and got the job. They called the group Smile and served as a support act for bands such as Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Yes and the original Genesis. Smile were signed to Mercury Records in 1969, and had their first session in a recording studio in Trident Studios that year. Staffell was attending Ealing Art College with Farrokh Bulsara, later known as Freddie Mercury, and introduced him to the band. Bulsara soon became a keen fan. Staffell left in 1970 to join another band, Humpy Bong; the remaining Smile members, encouraged by Bulsara, changed their name to "Queen" and continued working together. The band had a number of bass players during this period who did not fit with the band's chemistry. It was not until February 1971 that they settled on John Deacon and began to rehearse for the first album.
In 1973, after a series of delays, Queen released their first album, a self-titled project influenced by the heavy metal and progressive rock of the day. The album was received well by critics; Gordon Fletcher of Rolling Stone said "their debut album is superb,"[ and Chicago's Daily Herald called it an "above average debut". However, it drew little mainstream attention and the lead single "Keep Yourself Alive," a Brian May composition, sold poorly. Greg Prato of All Music Guide called it "one of the most underrated hard rock debuts of all time."
The album Queen II was released in 1974. The album reached number five on the British album charts,[12] while the Freddie Mercury-written lead single "Seven Seas of Rhye," reached number ten in the UK, giving the band their first hit. The album is their heaviest and darkest release,[13] with long complex instrumental passages, fantasy-themed lyrics and musical virtuosity. The band toured as support to Mott the Hoople in the UK & United States during this period, and they began to gain notice for their energetic and engaging stage shows. However, album sales in the US were, like its predecessor, low.queen is the one of metal/rock band who is always success when they are launch a new album they will become a legend rock/metal band in the world such as metalica,GUN n ROSES,megadeath, dream theater..and they are the most successful metal/rock band in english

Metallica

Metallica is one of the best loved bands in the world and their albums redefined hard rock and metal. Its one of the bands we had to bring to the Rock Band experience,” said Alex Rigopulos, co-founder and CEO of Harmonix. “Rock Band will allow gamers to jam with the guys through their long, successful career, from young, raw talent to mega stars, playing the hard-rocking sounds that the band is known for.”
About Metallica:
Since they formed in 1981, San Francisco Bay Area band Metallica have gone from an underground heavy metal band to one of the most successful acts in the world, with an intensely loyal fan base. RED HOT CHILI PAPERS

the Red Hot Chili Peppers are this There's not really too much that can be said about them that hasn’t already been said countless time, just starting to talk about Flea’s funky bass and Anthony Kiedis vocal style says it all really.
“The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a multiple Grammy Award-winning American rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1983 by Anthony Kiedis (vocals) Hillel Slovak (guitar), Michael “Flea” Balzary (bass) and Jack Irons (drummer). Throughout their career, the band has fused various elements of punk, funk, heavy metal, and rap. They have sold over 60 million albums worldwide,[citation needed] and also hold the record for most number one singles on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart with 11, and has held a record of 81 weeks at number one. The band rank #30 in VH1’s 100 artists of hard rock list.

Inconsistent and unstable lineups have influenced the band’s music, style, and success throughout the nine studio recordings they have produced. The most notable of such was the addition of guitarist John Frusciante, following the death of the previous, Hillel Slovak. With the band, Frusciante assisted in propelling the foursome’s once turbulent musical career into a successful and popular affair. Their second album together (fifth collectively), 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik, has since gone multi-platinum in numerous countries, and become an international sensation selling over 12 million copies, being labeled one of the most influential albums of all time. Though, during the process, Frusciante became uncomfortable with the new found success of the band, and quit in the late summer of 1992. The Chili Peppers, therefore, employed former Jane’s Addiction guitarist, Dave Navarro for their subsequent album, One Hot Minute. Released in 1995, it failed to meet the recognition which Blood Sugar Sex Magik saw, and, as a result, sold roughly 5 million units, less than half of its predecessor; vast creative differences between him and the rest of the band caused Navarro to be fired from the Peppers not long after.

Frusciante, in his absences, became severely addicted to heroin and almost lost his life. Nevertheless, in 1998 he completed drug rehabilitation and rejoined the Chili Peppers at the request of Flea The foursome returned to the studio to create 1999’s Californication, which would go on to sell 15 million units worldwide, becoming the band’s most successful album to date. It was followed up three years later by By the Way; an album which showed a far more subdued side to the Chili Peppers. Four years following, the group released Stadium Arcadium, making it the first time a Red Hot Chili Peppers’ line-up had not changed in three consecutive studio recordings.”

Former Sacrifice Manager, Ray "Black Metal" Wallace, Passes Away

Toronto metal icon Ray "Black Metal" Wallace has passed away after being in a coma following a brain aneurysm he suffered on November 15.

Ray managed SACRIFICE in the '80s/'90s and had close ties to Canadian metal legends ANVIL and RAZOR. He was also a local promoter, most recently organizing the original Rock 'N' Roll Heaven reunion party, and was working with Toronto's all-girl powerhouse SCARLET SINS.

Toronto music publicist Paula Danylevich, who had been a friend of Ray's for many years, has issued the following statement:

"It is with an extremely heavy heart and tears in my eyes that I deliver to all of Ray's friends the news we had all hoped we would never hear.

"At midnight tonight, Ray's mother, aunt and cousin, joined by nine of his friends including myself and the chaplin from Toronto Western Hospital held hands around Ray's bedside and prayed one last time for our friend and then said our final goodbyes. We popped the cork on a bottle of champagne and raised a glass to Ray in the waiting room as they prepared him for his journey.

"At 12:15am today Ray was taken to the operating room so that he could give the gift of life to MANY people. His organs will save many lives, something we know Ray would have wanted. He was the most selfless, giving person I have ever met.

"Arrangements for Ray's funeral will be announced shortly. Anyone wishing to donate to Ray's family in their time of need can find information on the 'Donations' thread on the 'ALL RIGHT THERE BLACK METAL' Facebook page or by emailing me directly at gr8pr@aol.com.

"For those of you who were unaware, Ray was the only person supporting his family and had recently moved home to take care of his mother and brother. His father, who suffered a stroke some time ago, has been in a nursing home since last year, and Ray was covering the expenses for this as well. Any donation amount will be so gladly appreciated by the Wallace family.

"I would like to extend my personal thanks to the 80+ friends who visited Ray over the past few days to support his family and to say their goodbyes. Ray's mother was comforted by the fact he had so many good friends.

"I would also like to personally thank the hospital staff in the ICU at Toronto Western Hospital, who were so supportive and flexible with the needs of his family and friends. The nursing staff were also amazed by the number of friends who supported his family. When his attending nurse asked me yesterday if Ray was a rock star, I just looked at him and smiled.

"God bless Raymond 'Black Metal' Wallace. He was one of a kind. He'll no doubt be running Heaven in no time! My heart is with all of you at this sad time."

Dear Paris, Here's An Idea….music and lifestyle

For the past few weeks, I've been astonished to find there's been no front page news on the life and times of Hilton heiress, Paris. I mean, with America at war, the healthcare system in disarray, and a presidential election creeping up, what else could possibly be more worthy of breaking news than Paris's recovery from her time in the slammer. We're all praying for you dear Paris; get well soon.

I'm sure I'm not the only one surprised by this; half of America probably expects Paris to randomly appear on every news station, perhaps speaking at the next State of the Union Address, where - when asked about her feelings on Iraq - she replies, "I'd love to go there; I've never been to Africa" and then concludes her speech with her signature catch phrase, "That's hot." Her dad beams with pride, her mom applauds enthusiastically, her dog Tinkerbell piddles from excitement.

Right….and the world goes further to hell in a hand basket….a designer hand basket, mind you.

Sarcasm aside, I, like so many other people, simply don't get why Paris Hilton is such a big deal. So, she's a heiress to the Hilton hotel chain. So what? I'm set to inherit my dad's one-man janitorial company and you don't see me getting attention (and he has a really expensive mop, people!). So she's blond, tall and thin. I can dye my hair, wear heels, and throw up after I eat. If that doesn't get me Paris-like attention, I guess I could just stop wearing underwear. I will miss you fruit-of-the-loom.

Truth be told, the whole Paris fascination is a bit of an enigma: she's not a big deal, she just makes herself one and that, in turn, makes everyone bite…even if they don't like the taste. Look at this article, I'm doing it too.

The Guiness Book of World Records hit the nail on the head in their 2007 edition when Paris received the record for "Most Overrated Person." Still, it's attention, albeit negative attention, and that's probably enough for Paris to deem it "hot."

I guess the whole Paris thing just makes me mad. Here is a person who doesn't need to worry about a job or paying rent or whether or not she can afford her healthcare premiums. She's been born with a silver spoon in hand and yet can't even seem to dish out anything good.

Is she helping make the world a better place? Does she take her elevated status in society and use it to help others by dedicating her life to a worthy cause? Other than the few license plates she may have pounded out in prison, has she really contributed anything tangible to society? Seems to me the only things she adds to our culture are scandals. I don't know about you, but I'm just about all scandaled out. They're so "Amy Fisher."

So, dear Paris, here's an idea…instead of parading around in shirts with that oh so clever (and grammatically incorrect) catch phrase of "Thats Hot. Your Not," go give back to the world. In lieu of hopping from party to party (all while trying to avoid those "pesky" laws) go and do something that helps others. Take your money, take your fame, and take your undeserved power and volunteer at a Children's Hospital, fight for animals, donate money to help the African AIDS crisis, head a fundraiser that helps cancer research. Don't do this for five minutes once a month; include them in your life's dedications.

When you start to do this, your biggest dream will come true: you'll find that you really are a big deal after all.

gun n roses come back

Back in December, Oakland offered free GUNS N' ROSES tickets to anyone who turned in a gun to the police they are a metal band legendary . At the time, people wondered how popular an incentive Axl and the gang would be to Oakland's gun-toting population. Now we have the answer: not very.
Over two days, in two locations, the gun exchange program netted 67 guns, according to a report from the Chief of Police, Wayne Tucker. It sounds like a failure, but at least the firearms were functional. A gun-for-a-computer swap in 1999 brought in 200 guns — 200 "old, rusted, inoperable" guns.

And the city didn't run out of GUNS N' ROSES tickets. In 1999, the city didn't have enough computers, and gave out vouchers. But Oakland couldn't get more computers, and those vouchers could never be redeemed, which, as the chief says, "understandably, created distrust and apprehension about future programs."
i think gun n roses as metal/rock band couldn't be popular as same as in the past..

Invigorated Van Halen delivers headbangers' delight

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Are you guys having as much fun as we are?"
The question posed about 15 minutes into Tuesday's show at Staples Center was Arena Rock 101. But it was delivered by David Lee Roth as he fronted Van Halen, which meant the world to the aging headbangers who had waited 22 years for this night.

For the record, the answer from the crowd that was on its feet the entire night: "Oh yeah."

The original members of Van Halen -- sans bassist Michael Anthony, replaced by Eddie Van Halen's 16-year-old son, Wolfgang -- simply tore it up during the first homecoming stop on their reunion tour. The sheer novelty of seeing Roth and Eddie onstage together might have been enough for many in the sold-out crowd, but the two-hour slugfest they delivered was genuine sweaty fun.

Back in the day, a Van Halen concert presented a dilemma: Who do you watch? Did you follow the wild-maned, high-kicking frontman who swaggered and staggered around the stage while threatening to defile the girlfriend of some wasted lout in the first few rows? Or did you study the most influential guitarist of his generation, the guy whose flying fingers and virtuosic tapping launched a thousand '80s metal bands -- maybe 100,000.

It's different now because Roth has reined in his act. Sporting leather pants and unbuttoned toreador jacket, he deployed an older man's version of those old leg kicks, but he didn't even attempt the trademark shouts and squeals that peppered those half-dozen killer albums from 1978-84. His infamous cockiness was all but absent, and he didn't address the crowd much; still, it was a kick to see Roth back in his natural habitat.

The band that once defined rock excess onstage and off has resurfaced as a study in joy. There were more smiles onstage than an Up With People halftime show as Roth relished his long-dimmed spotlight and Eddie Van Halen was free to shred again. The obvious pride and glee he showed in sharing the stage with his boy invigorated his work. As if shaking off the long national nightmare that was the band's post-Roth years, he tore into his solos, often tweaking them just enough to make the air guitarists look bad. He was simply outstanding.

A natural highlight was his thrilling 11-minute guitar solo that included most of "Eruption" and plenty of knob-twisting shenanigans. It was a reminder of just how little Eddie Van Halen has really let loose since the Roth era.

Wolfgang mostly sidestepped the spotlight, but his playing was meaty and his backing vocals sturdy. And the kid already has picked up on a rock requisite: tossing picks to the female fans. Atta boy.

The set list was peppered with songs that enjoyed heavy rotation on FM radio and a handful of album cuts for the hard-core. The gents got playful during "Somebody Get Me a Doctor," tossing in physician rapid-fire references from "I Don't Need No Doctor," "Life in the Fast Lane" and "Rocky Raccoon" -- seemingly just to see if anyone was paying attention. Eddie assumed the faux-pained guitar-god expression during the speedy, shoulda-been-a-hit "Romeo Delight," which included a snippet of the Who's "Magic Bus" during the breakdown.

If only Roth and Van Halen could have stuck it out for all those years like Daltrey and Townshend.

A7X

Avenged Sevenfold, sometimes abbreviated to A7X, is a punk/metal band from Huntington Beach, CA.

Consisting of members M. Shadows, Zacky Vengeance, Synyster Gates, Johnny Christ, and The Rev. Their first album was titled "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, and was recorded when the band members were 18 years old. Their followup album was entitled Waking the Fallen, and received positive reference in Rolling Stone magazine. City of Evil, released on June 7, 2005, strays away from metalcore and ventures further into the relatively new genre of 'Melodicore'.

Recently M. Shadows' vocal stylings have changed more to focus on melodic singing than on hardcore. There was a rumor that it was due to Shadow's having strained vocal cords, but, like it says, it was just a rumor and is denied by A7X; he can still scream as well as ever. Although the band's title and members' sobriquets make obvious reference to religion, Shadows stated in a recent interview that they're "not really religious at all". And there have been suggestions that Johnny Christ practices Paganism.

The band's named is an alleged reference to the book of Genesis in the Bible and the story of Cain and Abel, where Cain is punished to live forever in exile, alone and miserable. Anyone who relieved Cain of his misery by killing him would be "avenged sevenfold," or punished in a way that is seven times worse than Cain's punishment. Avenged Sevenfold's song "Chapter Four" has a title reference to Genesis IV, the chapter of the Bible in which the sotry of Cain and Abel takes place. The song's subject also appears to be this story.
