The Great Metal Debate

Go inside the conversation as our experts rank the greatest of all time.
They're a tough crowd and they know their stuff, so when nine of them get together to debate the Greatest Heavy Metal Bands of All Time, it's safe to expect a lot of agreement on the main points — and a lot of very specific, very heated disagreement on others, particularly which artists are or aren't metal.

In such debate lies much geekdom and fun, and MTV's metal brain trust — our panel of experts, consisting of nine die-hard, longtime fans — had a blast conjuring and debating this list.

Creating it was a two-part process.

In part one, we reached out to the most passionate and knowledgable metal fans working at MTV and asked them to send us their individual picks for the 10 greatest, with the only criteria being "whatever greatness means to you." Some feel that the influence a band had on others is the most important factor in judging greatness; others say the strength of the albums is the primary concern; and some believe the power of a band's live performance is the ultimate measure. We did not care what each participants criteria was; we only asked them to vote from their hearts.

Once we had all the lists, we did a little math. Every time a band was ranked #1 by someone, it received 10 points; #2 rankings received 9 points, and so on. When the points were added up, we had a list that represented the collective wisdom of the voters ... in theory, anyway.

In part two, we gathered everyone together, showed them the results, and asked them to either stand by it, or change it as they saw fit, the only rule being that a majority had to vote in favor of every change. The discussion and debate over the rankings is what you see in the Overdrive show.

There was some debate over the absence of newer jacks — particularly recent Scandinavian bands like In Flames and Emperor. In response, we point out that this is essentially a hall of fame, and, to paraphrase brain trust member Rob Mancini, the nature of the term "greatest" requires time — the best is yet to come from many younger bands, and thus it's not fair to compare their body of work to, say, Slayer's decades of decadence. So we also made a list of 10 bands we consider to be the most promising. In addition, there's an "Honorable Mention" list of the dozen runners-up, whom some brain trust members felt passionate enough about to include in their personal top 10s.

So, herein lies the results of our hours of (mostly) friendly arguing and our years of obsession. Talking about it, thinking about it, arguing about it made us want nothing more than to crank the volume up to 11 and give our well-trained neck muscles a good workout, and we hope it does the same for you.

Avenged Sevenfold Say New LP Will Have You 'Banging Your Head The Entire Time'

In October, the hard-partying, grill-sporting dudes in Avenged Sevenfold heavy metal band will release the self-titled follow-up to 2005's City of Evil, the band's breakout LP that's sold close to 810,000 copies in the U.S. alone. The album is the California metalcore act's first attempt at self-producing, but according to frontman M. Shadows, that wasn't always the plan.

"We were going to do it with Rob Cavallo," said Shadows, referring to the producer behind Green Day's 2004 LP American Idiot and My Chemical Romance's 2006 effort The Black Parade. "It was such a great match — he loved the songs we'd been working on. But he was too busy working on Kid Rock's next record, and he wasn't going to be able to work on ours until later on in the year."

Avenged the heavy metal band didn't know what to do. Here they were, sitting on a ton of new songs and facing pressure from their label to release the material as soon as humanly possible. "We respect Rob, but we couldn't wait," the singer said. "We had to do it ourselves. We had to get back out there on the road, and we needed to record this album."

Initially, the metal band's label, Warner Bros., wasn't thrilled with the idea of Avenged handling the production duties for their fourth album on their own. But all it took was a small sampling of the demo recordings they'd been working on for the label to give Avenged the go-ahead. Four months later, Avenged Sevenfold are just weeks away from finishing the LP. The band will head to New York later this month to mix the disc with studio engineer Andy Wallace (Linkin Park, System of a Down).

Shadows said the band had no problem producing the album themselves. "We met with a lot of different producers and felt that we would be going more in their direction, rather than doing what we wanted to do," Shadows said. "We wanted to make our record. We've spent a lot of time in the studio, and we've learned how to do everything. It was the only way we would be able to get our ideas across, 100 percent, to our fans."

The Red Shore Singer Killed In Crash

The West Australian reports that the lead singer of Geelong, Victoria, Australia-based heavy metal band THE RED SHORE have died in a road accident in a New South Wales, according to the group's booking agent.

An employee for Pan Studios in Geelong said that the company had received news that the singer, it is believed about 23, had died in the accident.

The group of the driver and merchandiser had also been killed, she said.

The men died after their minivan veered off Pacific Highway north of Coffs Harbour and struck a tree.

A man died on the spot and seven others were taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital.

One of the injured men, 30 years of age, who had been trapped in the wreckage van for an hour, died in hospital of serious head injuries.

The RED SHORE were walking with EU Death metal outfit ALL SHALL PERISH about Christmas, "Carnage" tour, when the accident occurred.

Both bands played in Brisbane's Club Phoenix on Tuesday night, were scheduled to play at Hermann's Bar at Sydney University on Wednesday night.

A van carrying eight men, mostly aged 20 years, plunged down a landfill before rolling into a tree at about 7am (AEDT).

NSW police later said the two dead men were aged between 22 and 27, and said relatives had asked that their names not be released.

Jarrod, a barman at The National Hotel in Geelong, where the band has played, described the singer as lead and quiet "chilled out".

"He was a nice, quiet guy, unlike the band's music," said Jarrod.

Sally Laver, the owner of the Pan Studios, said RED SHORE's musical career had just begun to take off.

The band drew the crowd of more than 200 people in his home town of Geelong, said.

"They are one of our biggest bands," she said.

Ms Laver said that the singer was "wonderful".

"He was a very sensitive young man."

"He was very passionate about everything he did."

Shadows, guitarists Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates, drummer The Reverend and bassist Johnny Christ.

The band produced its first full-length album “Sounding the Seventh Trumpet," when the members were 18 years old. (It was preceded by the EP “Warmness on the Soul.")On its sophomore effort for Hopeless Records, “Waking the Fallen," Avenged Sevenfold brings forth punk, metal and pop sensibilities. However they eschew the “rules" of the game. Instead of 2- to 3-minute songs, they penned 6- to 7-minute epics for the 12-song album.

“We take a lot of pride in that, too. We all have so many ideas. If there`s nothing we feel that`s really boring us, we don`t feel the need to trim them down," Vengeance has said. “The reason ("I Won`t See you Tonight") Part 1 is such a long song is because we felt really good about the parts."

The band has spent ample time on the road, spreading the mission of A7X, as they call themselves. They`ve toured with Shadows Fall, Mushroomhead and spent the summer of 2003 on the Warped Tour.

Atomic Meltdown

Biography of the Band
Atomic Kernsmelting was formed in 2000 in Southfield, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, Cody Lorang, Dar and his cousin Cody's bestfriend Joseph Fryman.

The band enjoyed limited success until 2002, when the added service of Brandon Mittison. Their carrers started off and they started to write lyrics for their original debut CD "Great Apocalypse". The CD was never recorded as a result of the budget. In 2004, Dar quit the band and was replaced by Brandon Nowikowski. At the same time, Joseph Fryman left the band and was replaced by Chris Gennrich. Shortly thereafter, Gennrich and Fryman switched again. Finally in 2005 Fryman moved to Kentucky and started his band called Romanoff. Gennrich now is the bass guitarist. Also in 2005, Danny FitzSimons was added to the band as the Keyboardist. In the latter part of 2006, Guitarist Steven Hardison from Virginia, in the band.
At the end of 2006, Atomic Kernsmelting underwent several changes, which inevitably lead to the separation of Danny FitzSimons (who was still in the band not only as a musician at the time), Chris Gennrich, who has been replaced by Brad Bolton, and Steven Hardison who has been replaced by former member Justin "JT" Tilton, as well as the former AM Guitarist Kyle Wilson, who rejoined the band in early 2007 when the band drummer. Their latest work in progress, "Atomic Kernsmelting", is written to appear at the end van'07. Danny FitzSimons returned as Keyboardist on March 14, 2007.

As of August 2007, Atomic Kernsmelting got back together. The Line is as follows;

Absentation (metal)

It was formed in a country that does not support all the metals, without recording labels, not magazines or festivals behind him. Absentation was originally formed in 2001 under the name [Epitaph] and the members were (Salah [guitar and voice] - Raafat [Guitar and Bass]), but the band to fall in late 2002.

Later in 2003 Salah formed Absentation, and he could not find someone who is able to perform this extreme gender. Then it began as a project man and he recorded his first Demo in 2004, which was remixed and released in 2005 as an EP titled Album (Death chapter).

Then, in mid 2006, Raafar and Hadi came Absentation and began working on its next album, which was recorded and mastered at the beginning of 2007 entitled (Mental battle Resurrection).

Later in 2007 Absentatin signed with an American Records Label called [A Dark Philosophy] for the album (Mental Battle Resurrection) won again released worldwide as a full album in length.

While some personal matters, Raafat left Absentation. But the band will continue to travel the world to spread with any mercy to maintain Death Metal Alive!

"On October 10th, 2007, the visas of the members of Iraqi metal band Acrassicauda expired. The Syrian government has made it clear that they will not renew them, meaning the band will be forced to return to Iraq. We don't need to stress just how dangerous this will be for them. It could very likely be a death sentence, and the time in which we can help them is quickly running out."

Vice is sponsoring events in the hopes of raising money to help the band leave the country, and will be hosting a fundraiser in Chicago on Wednesday, November 7th. The event is free to enter, and proceeds from both a raffle and all drinks will be donated to the cause.

Led Zeppelin, Metallica For US Bonnaroo Festival?

Led Zeppelin and Metallica will headline the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee next summer, according to an industry email.
The performance would be Led Zeppelin’s first US show since July 1977 and dispels the suggestion that their reunion show in London next week (December 10th) will be a one-off.
News of the headliners emerged in an industry newsletter sent by Bob Lefsetz, reports Billboard.
Speculation has grown that Led Zeppelin will announce additional dates for 2008, with many fans hoping to see the band perform at next years Glastonbury Festival.
Meanwhile, the festival would provide Metallica with the launching pad to launch their new album, due sometime in 2008.

Bon Jovi Fan Sues For Injuries, Lost Highway Stretches Overseas

A Bon Jovi fan is suing for over 13 million dollars for damages and injuries sustained when a man landed on him during a show last July in Edmonton, Alberta, according to CanWest News Service. In the suit the fan, Dennis Rainer Schulz, is suing multiple plaintiffs for the sum, claiming the injuries left him a paraplegic. Early reports claim Bon Jovi proper is not named in the suit, but it names the beer vendor, the promoter, the venue, the individuals behind Shulz that started fighting and the motor company that supplied those individuals with tickets as those responsible.just finished their initial run in the United States. in support of their latest effort Lost Highway, and the band talked about heading back up to Canada and traveling to the rest of the world.
